Annual Salary During Police Academy
New police officer recruits are paid $54,766 while attending the 26-week police academy and progress to $57,504 upon graduation.
Certified Lateral Officer Hires
- The starting salary for certified hires is commensurate with years of sworn law enforcement experience, beginning at $59,613. Keep what you’ve earned. Contact a recruiter to discuss your potential pay rate!
Annual Increases
City Council determines employee raises each year during the budget process. The amount of the increase varies.
Career Progression Increases
The Virginia Beach Police Department supports career progression from Police Officer I through Master Police Officer II. This four-step advancement includes salary increases, with officers earning up to $108,340. Promotion opportunities are also available - VBPD Sergeants can earn up to $119,445.
